Skopje:  It’s a Dog’s world

Skopje is an interesting European capital, most of the historic looking buildings were built in the last 5 years and made to look old.  It’s a city that hasn’t found itself but replicates other great capitals in the region.  The city is filled with statues which have no significance to Macedonia or its history.  The one thing Skopje does correctly is how it deals with its stray dog population.

The government tags all stray dogs with a yellow tag on their ear to indicate the dog has been vaccinated and spayed/neutered. The dogs also received regular check up from a vet through a program sponsored by the Macedonian government.  The dogs look healthy and happy, the program doesn’t provide food for the dogs but locals and tourist often leave scraps for the dogs.  The dogs are friendly and do not bark.  They don’t beg for attention but you will often see locals petting the stray dogs.
